The
Lithuanian National Foundation, Inc. was founded as the principal fund
raiser and supporter of national and cultural freedoms for Lithuania and
Lithuanians throughout the world. It was incorporated in 1973 as a
Not-For-Profit Corporation as defined in subparagraph (a) (5) of Section
102 of the Not-For Profit Corporation Law of the State of NY.
During the years of Lithuania’s occupation by the Soviet Union the LNF
sponsored such activities as:
-
Collecting and disseminating information about the economic, political, religious, social and demographic conditions in soviet-occupied Lithuania;
-
Printing and distributing literature about Lithuania and its struggle for independence;
-
Encouraging the preservation of Lithuania's culture and history;
-
Supporting the activities of individuals and organizations with similar purposes;
Raising funds for such activities.
In pursuing these goals, the Foundation worked
closely with the Supreme Committee for the Liberation of Lithuania;
funded ELTA Information Bulletins published in 4-7 languages and
distributed them to western press agencies, US Government officials,
libraries etc.; sponsored news broadcasts to Lithuania from four radio
stations in the West.
Since the re-establishment of Lithuania's independence on March 11,
1990, the LNF seeks to help the people of Lithuania overcome the effects
of 50 years of Soviet subjugation. On April 23, 1994, new bylaws were
adopted which state, "The main purpose of the LNF is to foster the
process of democratization in Lithuania by engaging in activities
authorized by its Charter."
